45 and counting...
Submitted by Doug Allen on Wed, 2004-04-21 16:03I usually don't do 'birthday announcements', but figured I'd tip my hat to the lead singer of one of my favorite bands closely associated with the 1980s British "new wave" scene. Robert Smith, singer and guitarist for the Cure, turns 45 years old today.

Lessons from Columbine
Submitted by Doug Allen on Tue, 2004-04-20 23:05Yesterday, April 20, marked the five-year anniversary of the Columbine massacre. I hadn't seen this column from Reason Online until they re-published their 1999 column today. It was written shortly after the slayings, and contains some of the best points of view I've read on the subject since the tragic day. Read more »
Asian Free-Market Seeds
Submitted by Doug Allen on Mon, 2004-04-19 19:57Lawrence Reed, from the Michigan-based Mackinac Center of Public Policy details his recent travels to Korea, China, and Vietnam. He returns with stories of both Austrian economics and free-market think tanks that have been sprouting up throughout the region. The column is definitely "glass half full", and gives an optimistic outlook of the trio of Asian nations.
Post Lost
Submitted by Doug Allen on Tue, 2004-04-13 17:44Although Neal Boortz comes across as a bit too pro-Bush and pro-Iraq War for my tastes lately, his morning column pointed out an interesting piece of journalism that reeks of something that goes beyond just a little spin. Read more »
Like taking candy from a baby
Submitted by Doug Allen on Fri, 2004-04-09 23:27Plenty of demonstrations and marches last week in Europe, as governments are starting to realize that the welfare state is keeping their economies stuck firmly in the mud, and are looking for ways to cut. As to be expected, out came the swarms of red flags in the streets at the slightest hint of scaling back nanny-state policies.
Not offending the offenders
Submitted by Doug Allen on Wed, 2004-03-24 23:22Despite knowing that a heinous, dangerous act physically carried out usually gets one thrown into a maximum-security prison in the first place...
Album Review: Nellie McKay's Get Away From Me
Submitted by Doug Allen on Tue, 2004-03-23 18:44When it rains in Spain, it pours
Submitted by Doug Allen on Mon, 2004-03-15 00:05First, terrorists make innocents pay for the government's support of the Iraq War, then - based on mortal fear - citizens decide to vote a band of socialists into power. A literal one-two punch in the groin for freedom-loving Spaniards.
We're Going to Disney World!

Under first-year head coach Steve Hawkins, the men's basketball program of Western Michigan University (alma mater of yours truly) won the MAC tournament, and will take its 26-4 record to Orlando, Florida, to play against Vanderbilt University in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday. WMU is making its first NCAA appearance since 1998.

Madrid: Who were the victims?
Submitted by Doug Allen on Sat, 2004-03-13 10:21In response to the latest horrific terrorist attack in Madrid, the Beijing Youth Daily provided this explanation for the catastrophe: [Note, however, that there is still some debate whether it was the work of an ETA separatist group or al-Qaeda]. Shock-Jock Terror Threat raised to Orange
Submitted by Doug Allen on Thu, 2004-03-04 00:58It's been fairly easy finding whacky quotes since the aftermath of February 1 (Superbowl Breastgate), and the subsequent FCC crackdown on those dangerous radio DJs, these past few weeks.
When commenting on Clear Channel's decision to yank the popular Howard Stern show off six radio affiliates due to impending FCC pressure, Daniel Weiss of Focus on Family speaks for everyone:
The Washington Cash Cow
Submitted by Doug Allen on Tue, 2004-02-10 00:45Stephen Moore's commentary in the Detroit News last week brilliantly outlines some of the frustrations among fiscal conservatives with the Bush Administration. In this one column, he covers the issues of taxation, government employment, socialized medicine, public pre-school, and the NEA. Many of the wide-ranging statistics he provides are quite alarming. A must read.
Libertarians hate cooperation
Submitted by Doug Allen on Sat, 2004-01-31 16:06...or so Thane Peterson believes.
In his latest column to BusinessWeek Online, Peterson attacks libertarianism and free-market proponents. His column is titled, "Where Can Liberals Go to Get Respect?". They may get more respect if they understood the concepts of libertarianism, and free market platforms, in general.
FCC set to protect Americans from Howard Stern, et al
Submitted by Doug Allen on Wed, 2004-01-28 19:48In the 'waste of tax dollars and resources' department:
The FCC has been quite busy protecting the public from themselves lately. Among other happenings, there was actually a congressional hearing Wednesday on (U2 lead singer) Bono's use of the f-word on network TV last year, and whether someone should be fined or not.
Heat rises, and so can its costs
Submitted by Doug Allen on Tue, 2004-01-20 01:03Supply and demand.
It seems like a pretty simple concept. It's a topic usually introduced in the first or second chapter of any Economics 101 textbook; although I'd imagine that anyone would recognize it, as its function - demand up, supply down, prices up - occurs constantly in our daily lives.
I had an online discussion on a message board last week pertaining to gas prices. One poster, who I’ll call 'Jane', added a post in which she said: Read more »
