Slumdog Millionaire

I saw Slumdog Millionaire tonight, a movie I had not heard of till a friend called me up and asked if I wanted to go. I generally don't like movies, but I was blown away by this one for many reasons, including the fantastic use of music in certain scenes. I remember hearing "Paper Planes" by M.I.A. before and didn't think much of it, but as the background to a scene in which two homeless brothers ride atop a train trying to hustle the passengers in the countryside of India, it just worked.

The movie really shows the

The movie really shows the life of a group of people that is often underrepresented in the media. It is something different and it really awakens us to the dismal life that these people live through.

Indian women are

Indian women are disproportionately beautiful. This is unfair.

The men are quite handsome too

Or so women tell me.

What about the ugly places?

If Indians are disproportionately beautiful, then what are the places that are disproportionately not beautiful?

Someone somewhere mentioned that the average level of beauty may be the predictable effect of describable social factors. To make a society more beautiful you need in effect to cull the uglies. And that sounds like it would take a social justice nightmare - try to imagine a society in which it is proportionately difficult for plain women to succeed reproductively, more so than other societies, and in a species that is 50/50 men and women. So a society which we might describe as a social justice nightmare may have the most beautiful women. India, with its infamous historical caste system, may qualify.

That cannot be discussed

It would be racist.

What would be racist?

Discussion of the ugly peoples of the world? Or discussion of how the pretty peoples got that way?

The former

Discussion of positives is allowed.

Only of the other, presumably

I presume it would be disallowed to talk about any superior traits of caucasians, as compared to non-caucasians.

If Indians are

If Indians are disproportionately beautiful, then what are the places that are disproportionately not beautiful?

I think I overdosed on JAPs in high school, and I tend to like exotic women, so I classify Jews, Israelis, Russians, and Eastern Europeans as disproportionately not beautiful. Of course, I take what I can get; beggars can't be choosers.

I am fond of Jewish,

I am fond of Jewish, Israeli, Russian, and Eastern European women, or at least the ones I have met.

As for Indians, I've met plenty of plain-looking Indian women in engineering. However, there is something about the accent I like. And the food is wonderful. But their culture is very traditional and most seemed to be paired off much earlier than your typical westerner. I don't think I know an available Indian woman in my college, though I don't know all of them personally.

On the plus side, they will still be around after secular western liberals die off in a generation of childless hedonism.

Just so we're on the same page, are you talking about typical Indian women, or Indian actresses?

Granted, my sample is a bit

Granted, my sample is a bit skewed, but my impression is based on Indian women I've met in person, mostly at college or seminars, which probably means they come from fairly wealthy families. The only Indian actress I'm familiar with is the one who plays the surgeon on ER, and while she has a British accent (which is the ultimate in sexiness), she is more of the girl-next-door type in terms of looks.
