Steven Pinker is hands-down my favorite living public intellectual.  His New York Times Magazine article The Moral Instinct is a good piece to read if you're not familiar with his work.

I loved that article. So

I loved that article. So many interesting, useful tidbits. Pinker is the ultimate second-hand dealer in ideas. It's not at all clear to me, what, if any, independent discoveries or insights he can be properly credited with, but the clarity and persuasion of his writing and his ability to summarize and integrate wide-ranging research is nothing short of remarkable.
