Best of 2006

After three straight flat-out awesome years, my 2006 was merely a Borat "Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!" I'm not disappointed; a slight reversion to the mean was inevitable. And I'm gonna spank 2007 till it's red and puffy and begging for more. I know I'm a little late with this list, but I was without the internets for a few days...

Underwhelming political story of the year: the election. What a yawner.

Blogosphere high point: Radley Balko's work on the Corey Maye case.

Blogosphere low point: the feminist blogosphere's defense of the atrocity of justice known as the Duke rape case.

Blogosphere newcomer of the year: Ilya Somin.

Best pornstache: Adam Morrison

Runner up: The Old Man

Most overused phrase: "It is what it is."

Pop song of the year: "How to Save a Life" by The Fray.

Most nausea-inducing song of the year: "Lips of an Angel" by Hinder.

Biggest crybaby: Adam Morrison

Television show of the year: Deadwood, for going out on top.

Shark-jumping television show of the year: Battlestar Galactica.

Television show disaster of the year: Lost.

Television blowhard of the year: Aaron Sorkin, who believes that anyone not living on the west coast or in DC is an ignorant bumpkin.

Best new show: slim pickins this year. Heroes had a decent enough start but trailed off mid-season so it's a tie between it and Friday Night Lights.

The Justin Timberlake award to Scott Scheule...

...for bringing sexy back.

Politically-clueless celebrity of the year: Adam Morrison, who used his $6.2 million rookie year salary to buy posters of Karl Marx and Che Guevara.

The Carlos Solis award to Brandon Berg. No further elaboration possible. But a clue: Xiao Mei.

Lastly, snipped from a conversation I had with the Solis Award winner a few weeks back:

BB: You know what I like about our commenters?
JW: What?
BB: They're not Kevin Drum's commenters.

That was his roundabout way of expressing how great you all are. I agree. You guys are awesome. Hi-Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!
