Leisure activity

I know many of you are looking frantically for guidance on this issue, so let me put my two cents in: forget the PS3 and get a Wii.

Yes, the graphics are vastly better on the PS3, but the Wii has one really important advantage: it's fun in a different way than previous consoles have been fun. The PS3 is basically more of the same with only slight improvements. The Wii is innovative in a way that I expect will soon become standard with consoles.

Nintendo's approach was so good, it's almost the climax of a movie. Why compete with the graphics? People can already choose from a couple hundred titles that are all pretty much the same. Making the characters look marginally more real is not a great enough achievement to justify a whole new release. Instead, they went in a different direction with mediocre graphics, and it worked like a dream.

For those of you who don't know but would like to, investigate the Wii site linked above. The controller for the Wii (if you use just the main one) is a stick with buttons, basically, and it responds to the motion of your hand as well. For instance, in the included demo game you can simulate bowling, golf, boxing, tennis, and baseball (pitching and hitting). For a sports game it doesn't matter so much, since you could actually just go out and bowl, hit, or play golf if you're really hurting for things to do. But this just demonstrates the capabilities. When you're ready, you can swing a sword and block with a shield in Zelda. I can't wait to see what other games will come out, and I'm not even a gamer.
