I'm no supporter of

I'm no supporter of protectionist tariffs, but this comparison isn't exactly fair. Are they seriously suggesting that anyone still uses candles for light? All real lighting is electric (or sunlight). Candles are used more for ambiance and scent than for light to read/work by. As such, Bastiat's piece is making a satirical argument that is related to the bill in question only insofar as it mentions candles and tariffs. Candles are now a luxury good in the USA, not the necessity that they once were in France for Bastiat to write on. The goods candles now compete against are things like potpourri, air fresheners, mantle decorations, etc. Not(!) lightbulbs and sunlight.
