Osama Plays The Race Card

Some random observations from translation of the tape released yesterday allegedly containing a message from Osama Bin Laden:

* He plays the race card: "The West is incapable of recognising the rights of others. It will not be able to respect others' beliefs or feelings. The West still believes in ethnic supremacy and looks down on other nations. They categorise human beings into white masters and coloured slaves.

* He sees France's banning of headscarves in school as part of the Western war on Islam.

* He has added Hindus to the "Crusader-Zionist" axis.

* He sees Muslims as victims in Sudan.

It may be my own biases affecting my thinking, but he sounds more desperate than ever.

So apparently Islam is now a race? Oh Osama...

"He sees France's banning of headscarves in school as part of the Western war on Islam."

Well, isn't it?

"He sees Muslims as victims in Sudan."

Well, aren't they?

Rad, I agree with the French

Rad, I agree with the French head scarf ban comment, but in the Sudan isn't the aggresion going in the direction of Christians and "animists"?

You're probably thinking of Khartoum's war on southern Sudan, which was supposedly settled by a brokered peace treaty in January 2005 (after two years of negotiations). How stable that is remains to be seen, but the human rights catastrophe that currently has Sudan in the news is the ongoing genocide against farming peoples in Darfur, in western Sudan. The victims (as well as the perpetrators) in Darfur are overwhelmingly Muslim; the conflict is divided along ethnic and socioeconomic lines rather than religious or geographical ones as it was before.

I think bin Laden's claims that this is all the result of divide-and-conquer politics by the "Crusader-Zionist" axis are silly. The imperialists in Khartoum and their hired killers in Darfur have plenty of their own reasons and interests at stake in slaughtering Muslim farmers. But setting the debate over the explanation to one side, it is empirically true that the victims in Sudan are, indeed, Muslims, and that bin Laden is correct to claim that the genocide involves professed Muslims slaughtering fellow Muslims.

Rad: The western war on

Rad:

The western war on Islam is as real as the war on christmas.

Brian, But the ban is an

Brian,

But the ban is an invasion of religious liberty, and one which was pushed by western politicians deliberately targeting Muslims, n'est-ce pas?

Christian crucifixes and

Christian crucifixes and Jewish skullcaps were also part of the deal.

And, as if an Osama-headed state would allow any individuals to openly wear non-Muslim religious symbols and forms of dress anywhere (much less in a public school).

Rad - Sure its an affront to

Rad -

Sure its an affront to religious liberty in a small way (and out of context). But as Doug points out, it was against most religious headgear or fashion wear.

And also, only if one accepts the Francocentric notion that "l'ouest, c'est la France" can one extrapolate that into a peculiarly western war on Islam.

Further, assuming arguendo that the law was in fact aimed at muslims with the intent to deny their 'muslimity', wouldn't that (in itself) be more of a "slap" on Islam versus a war? If it really were a (French) war on Islam, then I'd expect pogroms, shuttering of mosques, persecutions, specific laws banning muslims from employment, etc. Granted the cultural prejudice of the French gives a de facto exclusionary rule to the muslim immigrants from North Africa, but can one extrapolate that to a "war"?

The craven refusal to print the cartoons of Mohammed (and thus adhering to a modern religious-tradition of Islam, though one not commanded by the Qu'ran or even observed by people contemporary with the prophet) would seem to argue against the notion that there is some sort of a western war on Islam.

Additionally, when osama

Additionally, when osama talks about muslims in Sudan being oppressed, he's referring to (and justifying) the Janjaweed light-skinned african/arab militias slaughtering the dark-skinned african muslims of Darfur.

Don't forget Germany and

Don't forget Germany and Holland's new extra special immigration scrutiny aimed at Muslims. Only Muslims will be asked "What do you think of homosexuals" and "Would you allow your daughter to play sports"? It's amazing to see how progressives have become closed borders interrogators as of late. Though the Green Party in Germany has resisted the efforts to their credit.
