Shopping Caused 9/11...

...according to Kalle Lasn, founder of "Buy Nothing Day", designated as the day after Thanksgiving by a movement whose goal it is to fight consumerism.

WN: Some people criticize BND as teenage high jinks, or bad for the country considering we're at war and shopping is patriotic. How do you respond?

Lasn: Over-consumption in the so-called First World has ecological implications. It's one of the root causes of the ecological crisis we are in. I think it has psychological consequences because we have become consumer drones who live lives of consumption, suffering from mood disorders.

And since Sept. 11, many people have realized that over-consumption has political dimensions. Many people are angry at us because of how we control the global economy. So there is an ecological, psychological and political dimension to BND, and people who don't get it should look a little bit deeper.

As an olive branch to the anti-capitalist movementarians out there, I will buy nothing on Friday so that the forces of greed suffer a crushing blow, ecological harmony is realigned, and Islamofascists are placated.[1]

fn1. Actually, it's because I'm working on Friday. They didn't say anything about Saturday, did they?

Retarded. Since buying is

Retarded.

Since buying is nothing more than trading money for goods, do you think they feel that it's the goods themselves that are bad, producing the goods, trading the goods, or using the goods? Would they be mad at an Amish person building something?

Or is it just the sheer quantity they're upset with? What if a farmer made a LOT of butter? Should the farmer not trade it for clothes to wear, on BND?
Should the farmer wait a day?

This resembles that "buy no

This resembles that "buy no gas on this day" gimmick. People won't buy less overall; they will just buy more on the day before or after.

I'm going shopping on Friday.

Ah, yes. The old "Don't buy

Ah, yes. The old "Don't buy anything today! Because, you know, buying stuff is evil, producing stuff is evil!" trick. I wonder what they're really protesting?

Psst! It ain't Communism.

It's Capitalism, plain and simple. And which country advocates Capitalism?

Psst! It ain't Europe.

At least one part of the

At least one part of the statement I can take issue with:

Over-consumption in the so-called First World has ecological implications. It’s one of the root causes of the ecological crisis we are in. I think it has psychological consequences because we have become consumer drones who live lives of consumption, suffering from mood disorders.

I think those consequences only follow if you identify your life with consumption, which I don't think is a sane or healthy thing to do. In Ayn Rand-speak, it's similar to confusing the full flourishing of a human life with mere biological survival. There are many aspects of the human experience which matter to many people and which aren't reducible to consumption, like (just thinking off the top of my head) community, friendship, strength, courage, love, justice, creative endeavor, religion, art, science, music, posting to blogs, etc (ok, maybe not that last one ).

Since buying is nothing more than trading money for goods, do you think they feel that it’s the goods themselves that are bad, producing the goods, trading the goods, or using the goods? Would they be mad at an Amish person building something?

I'm actually not sure that it's any of those things; I think like most socialists they are motivated by envy. The only clue for that here is the last comment about how over-consumption has the "political dimension" that the US consumes more than other nations because it's wealthier. I suspect that if somehow they perceived everyone was consuming equally they would be OK with it, but of course that can't be realized in capitalism (or I would guess in any society more complex than a couple people living together).

Actually, we can't assume

Actually, we can't assume that consumption moves from buy nothing day to another day, because preferences change daily. It can probably be shown that this effect does occur in general, but it isn't a given fact.

I find it funny that buy nothing day was designated for the busiest shopping day of the year. That's like hosting a tv special on "why you shouldn't watch football" during the telecast of the Super Bowl. No-one will notice, if they ever would.

I go out every year after

I go out every year after Thanksgiving just to celebrate all the free and voluntary exchange that takes place. My friends call it Commerce Day; I think it would make a great candidate for national recognition, but only if we decide to celebrate it, well, freely...

You guys are so gullible.

You guys are so gullible. She's just trying to thin out the crowds a bit so she doesn't have to fight for the best stuff.

Brilliant!

That's hilarious.

That's hilarious.

It's amazing to me how

It's amazing to me how banal, stereotypical, lathargic, psychopathic, I think most of your comments are to the concept of buying nothing for one day. Since you guys seem to love your indentured servitude so much, why don't you just get it over with and become full fledged junkies, do heroin now and die. Take your pills faster and die. Oh, wait, the pills are medicine and help you. Yep, shopping is good for the economy, uhhh huh. Our leaders care about us, yep. You deranged lunatics! I really am happy that you guys are so happy with your insanity and insatiable appetites for things you don't need. Which is completely destroying your world and mine. You selfish cowards. The social programming centers did well to steer you with the rest of the sheeple. Well, I know it isn't much fun in hell as you guys say it is since the disease you all worship has devoured the world into a spineless, suicide economy. It's not funny to be a tool so stop with the bad jokes you learned from your monoculture tv.

I would like to comment that diversity is survival of the species, the more you consume the less you are, and what the dali llama called western civilization as being mentally deranged hungry ghosts.

Oh, by the way, did you guys know "america" was the basis and biggest sponsor of the nazi regime as well as new holder of the title of police state dictatorships? Of course not right? George Bush Jr's grandpappy Prescott Bush was a major funder as well to the regime of social racism? Do you know about chemtrails and population control? That fluoride in the water started in nazi conentration camps to make people docile, stupid, and crazy. That, Most of our well known leaders are blackmailed, insecure, megalomaniacs who brutally sacrifice and skull hump young boys and girls all around the world for satan? NO, that's just conspiracy theories, man. We know what we are talking about cause the experts told us so, right? Everything is perfect and happy, yep. Inflation is natural. Wal mart is an american company. Corporations care about humans. Ok, we have our downs, but we love life and freedom, right? We live in a free country and if you don't like it get out right? ..........Well, it was never free here, it was started and is still very poorly maintained by slave labor/ indentured servitude types like all you by nothing day/ life on planet earth haters out there. But you all are like so smart and have like 6 phd's and 4 jobs and you liked worked for it and like stop making fun of me, your moms fat. Hey, I know I know, "hail satan, god is dead, hail satan, god is dead". amerikkka is rosemary's baby. So like, please grow up and get off the corporate nipple you losers. Stop spoiling the picnic you fire ants.

Here is what you all are striving for in your fake plastic horrow show http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preta
Just take your mark of the beast to completely prove your loyalty to satan now and quit whining. Take your microchip, take your pills and die. Hurry up, your not going away fast enough. Consume yourselves like evil always does in the end. May God bless your confused souls. I will pray for you all to get very large portions of yourselves until you wake up from your lemming, elitist spawned, hallucinations. Amen. Phew, you guys aren't real, you all can't be that far Mr. dahmer! ...Can you? HELP! I just again hope you are all very happy with all the sufferring you are creating on the planet. Is it worth it? You guys happy? I am not. But I grew up around you all. Takes one to know one, right? I'm getting clean though. No more denial for me. But in the land of the blind the man with one eye rules. And the man with two eyes is in prison. You dorks. But I could be just joking? Shopping rules! Get rich or die trying! Awesome! Extreme! Excellent! ...and so very immature, narrow minded, and suicidal.

less is more. Buy nothing

less is more. Buy nothing everyday for a better today and tomorrow! It's the only way to truly help the economy! The federal reserve creator of the note "US Dollar" is actually a private corporation that loans the united states it's bill with interest and has no real interest in the USA at all. They are international bankers interested in putting everyone in debt/slavery. This means you. Don't be a sucker. Buy nothing day everyday if you have the backbone and creativity left.

Where the hell did *those*

Where the hell did *those* come from?

Are there more like them? Can we use them for experiments?
