Nature\'s Fury

I'm a bit of a weather-phile, and I've rarely read language like this from a National Weather Service message. Keep the people of the central Gulf Coast states in your thoughts tonight.

HURRICANE KATRINA

A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED STRENGTH...RIVALING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANE CAMILLE OF 1969.

MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.

THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL. PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FAILURE IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME WALL AND ROOF FAILURE.

HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT. AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK.

POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE KILLED.

National Hurricane Center

UPDATE: Via Instapundit, here is a live webcam of a street corner in New Orleans.

UPDATE II: As of early Monday morning, the eye of Katrina appears to be moving onto shore, and will pass just southeast of New Orleans. The "good" news is that being on the west side of the eye - as well as the hurricane slipping to "only" a Category 4 - this may spare the city of New Orleans from the worst possible scenario. Still, extreme damage and flooding is expected in the major city which mainly rests below sea level. With the proximity of the eye, I'd imagine the area from roughly Biloxi, MS to Mobile, AL will witness the fiercest part of the storm.

On the plus side, there's always this option for dealing with hurricanes:

Heh. I'm an atheist, too

Heh. I'm an atheist, too Abe. I guess I was more anticipating the response of those that consider N'Awlins a den of inequity...

"God Help the City of New

"God Help the City of New Orleans"???

Seems to me that God was pretty intent on destroying it. Probably because it's filled with sinful revellers most of the time. People who need a little smiting from a vengeful deity.

Hence, all the seemingly endless calls to "Pray for New Orleans" strike me as a little odd. Isn't it a little late for that? God's already rendered judgment, apparently.

(BTW, just so we're clear, I'm an atheist attempting a little irony, here)

God Help the City of New

God Help the City of New Orleans
Catallarchy has an excerpt of a National Weather Service bulletin that pretty much says New Orleans is going to be destroyed in the next 12 hours.

I'm really going to miss it.

This was a NWS urgent

This was a NWS urgent message out of the New Orleans, LA office, released at 4:13 PM (CDT).

What specific area is this advisory referring to?

I just wonder how long it

I just wonder how long it will be before we hear stories of "price gouging" by the greedy businesses in the Gulf states area... May God keep the suffering low.

Holy Hell The National

Holy Hell
The National Weather Service is basically predicting that New Orleans will become part of the sea tomorrow. What isn't drowned...

Turns out the government and

Turns out the government and media exaggerated the danger. Imagine that.

When I originally read that

When I originally read that NWS message, it did seem that much of the wording was written by someone preparing for the apocalypse.
