A casualty of a greater war

Bad news from Afghanistan: a female television personality has been murdered. Until being pressured out, Shaima Rezayee, 24, hosted an MTV-like show that upset religious conservatives. She showed music videos in a country where just a few years ago women were not allowed to hum on the street. She bantered with males in a country where such idle chatting is viewed with extreme suspicion. So far there is no suspect and so no motive, but it would hardly be surprising if her murder were related to her broadcasting. The article linked above includes police speculation that members of her family were involved, but this article quotes her as saying her family was very supportive.

This is a terrible incident. It's shameful that someone should want to kill a young women because she wears Western clothes and plays music videos. We shouldn't forget that there are still many, many places in the world where what we consider perfectly acceptable behavior is considered outrageous and immoral. Just to be perfectly clear: murdering Rezayee for her non-offenses is barbaric and morally indefensible. There is no excuse, Islamist culture or not. This shows just what we're up against, culturally. It's almost mind-boggling to think about, but just a few years ago women were not allowed outside the house without a male relative accompanying. Not everyone favored that system, but some did.

To try to find the silver lining, this show was on the air and is still on the air. Apparently it's fairly popular. We knew about Afghanistan's huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, and their post-Taliban joy. It's obviously succeeding, to some extent, in bring Afghanistan out of the Dark Ages. An innocent woman has been murdered, but the revolution continues.

Yeah. How dare those foreigners view as "outrageous and immoral" our "perfectly acceptable behavior" of having the state murder citizens who have transgressed our moral code.
