Texas Takes a Step Backwards

I got this in an email a few days ago:

The Texas House of Representatives today voted to ban gay, lesbian and bisexual Texans from serving as foster parents. The legislation also authorizes the state to conduct investigations into the sexual orientation of current foster parents. Representative Talton (R-Pasadena) bypassed the committee process by introducing this legislation as an amendment to the larger foster care restructuring bill, Senate Bill 6. The legislation was adopted by a vote of 81-58.

To be honest I'm torn on this issue because I am not in favor of the government providing foster care service. However, I can't help but feel that this amendment is cruel, both for the parents and children involved, and unjust. They are going to throw away a resource in a foster care system that is desperate for that exact resource - loving, stable families. Why?

Here is the exact text of the amendment if you are interested.

Show me the evidence that gay families and/or bisexual families are less equipped to care for children, even troubled children, than any other family. The argument that children are better off with one male and one female parent cannot even be used in this case because the Texas legislature does not care what genders the parents are. It could easily be a happily married, monogamous relationship of one male, and one female bisexual that was banned from having foster kids in their home. Actually all it would really take is one bisexual parent to disqualify a family from taking care of foster children.

The state of Texas has now officially institutionalized bigotry. Yet somehow I doubt this is the first time they've done so. Many of us had hoped that those days were past.

Damn the thugs that run this state.

Actually, I think the proper comparison should be whether children are worse off living with gay families than in living with no families at all. Even if it could be shown that heterosexual husband-wife families are better for raising children than gay families, we still have to consider the severe shortage of adoptive and foster care parents. If we lived in a world where there were more prospective adoptive and foster care parents than children to be adopted and cared for, then maybe we could talk about how best to allocate and deal with the shortage of supply. But in a world with too many children and too few parents, it makes no sense whatsoever to favor the status quo over allowing gay people to adopt.

I'm ashamed to note that my state legislature has recently voted to ban non-heterosexual couples from adopting children. Rainbough Phillips adds his comments: Show me the evidence that gay families and/or bisexual families are less equipped to care for
