The End of Comment Spam?

I've installed the "WordPress":http://wordpress.org/ "NoFollow plugin":http://wp-plugins.net/index.php?id=99 in order to discourage comment spammers. Basically, the plugin adds an attribute rel="NoFollow" to all links in comments and trackbacks, including author links. This prevents search engines from counting a link in their ranking algorithms, making comment spam useless to the spammer. It's taking the spammers a little while to catch on, but it's hard for spammers who waste more resources to compete with those who waste fewer resources, so they'll come around eventually. The end result may be spam that targets the people reading the blog rather than search engines, but we'll have to wait and see.

Of course, this will also prevent legitimate commenters' links from being counted, but I do hope that most people post comments here for reasons other than increasing their sites' search engine rankings.
