American Idol Cleveland/Orlando/San Francisco

Finally first round auditions are over. No more watching people with no skill attempt to sing pop music (or opera as the case may be)!

Here is the best from the past two nights.

From Cleveland:

Briana Davis - Absolutely the best this week! Briana sang Phantom of the Opera and pulled it off. She has a beautiful soprano voice and hit notes that most of us only dream of. On a side note she has blue hair.

Anthony Federov - The first "you remind me of Clay Aiken" contestant in the contest. Anthony is no Clay Aiken but he does have an impressive voice, and performed a moving rendition of John Secada's "Angel."

From Orlando:

Vonzell Solomon - I would not be surprised if Vonzell turned into this season's come from behind winner. She has a powerful voice, and is already impressive stylistically unlike many of the other contestants this year. Plus she is a great performer, and fairly agile on her feet (whether that leads to a victory remains to be seen). She sang "Chain of Fools," which has become an overused and boring audition song, but Vonzell sang it like she had written it herself.

Dezmond Meeks - Dezmond created quite a controversy among the judges singing James Brown's "I feel good." Paula loved it, Simon hated it, and Randy as usual just wasn't sure. It was impressive though. Dezmond sounded very much like James Brown and had moves to match. The real problem is that all of Randy's abilities at identifying good singing talent seem to vanish whenever the contestant is moving. As for Simon he finds any dancing in the first round auditions to be cheesy and staged (even if it isn't), and thus has a similar bias against moving contestants. I suspect he thinks that a contestant who is dancing is attempting to compensate for the fact that they cannot sing well, which does often turn out to be the case.

From San Francisco:

Ross Williams - Referred to by Ryan Seacrest as a "Crooner," Ross sang a song whose name was not shared with us, but it was very good. It was a smooth jazzy song, and Ross had a very smooth mellow voice that flowed nicely with it.

Justin Clark - Justin could pull off a Stevie Wonder cover album very well if he had the desire to. Hopefully he will be able to sing other artists just as well. He certainly did justice to "Ma Chere Amore," which is something that has happened seldomly in seasons past.

Nadia Turner - Nadia definitely reminded me of Tamyra Gray stylistically. She sang "until you come back to me." -I'm running out of things to say:lipssealed: - Blond fro, cool personality, great personal style, and she's definitely a top 24 contender.

There were some other good singers I could mention, and a few that really should have made it through that didn't. However, I would be surprised to see most of the remaining "good talent," that we were shown this week in the top 24.

As for the next round apparently there were 193 contestants that were sent to Hollywood. Last year there was something like 115. The year before that was closer to 100. Add to that the fact that this year they will be selecting 24 out of that lot, and the Hollywood round should prove to be fairly interesting. There will be many broken hearts to say the least. Given how many contestants are involved, I'm curious how many weeks they will try to stretch round 2 into -2? 3?

I really wouldn't be disappointed if they just cut to the chase and showed us the top 24. Why drag it out? Oh right... Because its Fox and I'll watch regardless of how long they drag this out.

The song Ross Williams did

The song Ross Williams did is called "Moody's Mood for Love." It's based on a saxophone solo by sax player James Moody on the jazz standard "I'm in the Mood for Love." Eddie Jefferson wrote lyrics to Moody's improvised solo in the early '50s and another singer named King Pleasure had a hit with it a couple of years later. Jefferson and Pleasure were both singers of vocalese, a style that took improvised instrumental solos and put words (often funny or clever) to them. Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross were other big names in vocalese; Joni Mitchell recorded one of their songs called "Twisted." Great to hear this music surfacing on American Idol. If you liked it, check out some of the recordings of the people who did it best. I'll be rooting for Ross, though jazzy types haven't fared well on AI.

What do you think about the

What do you think about the judges saying "Welcome to Hollywood" while in Cleveland, not Hollywood?

:gossip:I was very impressed

:gossip:I was very impressed with Ross Williams and I would have to say that he is my early favorite. That kind of music that he is crooning is not only great, but also very marketable. I am thinking of the young artist Michael Buble as an example. Plus, not only would he be well recieved among the young hipsters but among older adults and seniors with an ear for that kind of music. Kind of venturing into the "Clay Aiken demographic." I'll be watching his progress with interest.

Ahhh... Constantine:smitten:

Constantine Mouralis is definitely impressive. He stands a great chance of becoming the next American Idol. He's so versatile in singing and he can dance too despite his being a rocker... I'm rooting for Constantine :)

Ross is awesome. My sister sang with him in vocal jazz in high school several years back. I remember hearing him many times and his voice is so relaxing and mellow. Does anyone know if he made it to the next round, just like Emily, I didn't see him on last night so I'm just wondering? Thanks

Look at it this way with

Look at it this way with Constantine. If he wins, he can always employ his band on tour with him. Clay Aiken did it when he became famous, he brought his friends to work with him. Constantine did the right thing, he has an opportunity for exposure that will help him and perhaps his band in the future if he wins. Even if he doesn't win, he will gain considerable exposure. Constantine definitely has the X factor.
And he brings something considerably different to the American Idol show. He can even be the beginning of changing music in the industry today back to rock and roll. He is edgy enough to get radio play. I am sure Clive Davis has his eye on Constantine.

does n e 1 kno wut

does n e 1 kno wut constantines mouralis sang? i hrd it a long time ago, and i likd it ever snc. sorry im not using prfct nglish, i m using short hand:wall:

I love Constantine

I love Constantine Mouralis.

This guy is the only reason I am watching. He makes this year's idol more interesting to watch. He is pro compared to the others.

Constantine Mouralis is the

Constantine Mouralis is the hottest, edgiest contestant on the show. Do you see how he looks into the camera when he sings. He's got that thang that makes the girls go crazy. Plus we need some more rockers in mainstream music. We have enough female vocalists and boy band types of singers...we need some rock and roll!

:smitten:Hello, I was just

:smitten:Hello, I was just reading your postings about Constantine. At first, I had to admit, I was not a big fan of his, I was not thrilled that he abandoned his band for this American Idol crap, but it is true he has really grown on me. At first, I thought I definitely would vote for Mario Vasquez, he has a lot of star potential. Although, this week with the Sting choice, I have to admit I am a HUGE Constantine fan. He does manipulate the camera, he looks right into it and knows what he is doing. He is very experienced as far as his star potential goes. I don't know what it is, but I find him more and more attractive everytime I see the performance. He doesn't have the best voice in the competition, and I think he knows it, but he has a lot of other things going for him, so I genuinely hope he sticks around the competition.

ahhhh constantine, enough

ahhhh constantine, enough said:smitten:

:smitten::razz::smile:

:smitten::razz::smile: Constantine is a living dream. Im with the lady that said he has the look girls/women crave. I mean I am far from a "spring chicken" and my heart stops and I cant breath when I hear and see him sing. I finally know why girls made such behinds of themselves at Beatles and Elvis concerts!!! If he doesnt win I will be the first one to console him for the rest of his life if needed.
