Breaking News: All Medicines Have Risks...

...and to make matters worse, we don't know what all of them are. I am reminded of this now that the FDA has issued a warning for naproxen, based on evidence of some cardiac risk. For information, naproxen is an old heavy duty NSAID, ibuprofen on steroids. It's sold under the brand Aleve, but it's also available as a cheap generic; most people take it for acute gouty attacks and some other assorted aches and pains.

Anyway, what are the nannies and the socialists to do on this one when they don't have drug complanies, high prices, and direct-to-consumer advertising to kick around?

I know: retract approval of all drugs everywhere, and run them through the FDA all over again, after going through several more layers of the approval process. Then we'll be safe.

Update: Educated Guesswork has more on naproxen.

Man, you're just jumping all over us nanny-socialist types, aren't you?

Actually, I'm 'for' the FDA getting it's act together and stopping the in-fighting within the agency -- and then simply adding additional 'risk' warnings to the drug labeling if they feel compelled.

It's that, or everyone goes back to good ol' pure aspirin, and those lovely gi bleeds.

I'm sure it was only a figure of speech, but technically speaking, Nanoproxen isn't "ibuprofen on steroids" being that it's an NSAID ("Non Sterodial Anti-Inflammatory Drug").
