Quote of the Day

One of the biggest errors made by Libertarian anarchists is assuming that because an institution is an unjust monopoly (because it confiscates its income by force and puts its competitors out of business by force), this makes everything such institutions do also unjust. The latter proposition simply does not follow from the former.

Sold out what?

Sold out what?

Or: "At least the trains ran

Or: "At least the trains ran on time..."

consequentialism wins again

consequentialism wins again :)

Has Randy finally sold out?

Has Randy finally sold out?

The cynical interpertation

The cynical interpertation of that statement is "a broken clock is still right twice a day."

The latter proposition

The latter proposition simply does not follow from the former.

And yet there is absolutely nothing the state can accomplish without doing injustice.

Killing terrorists is not evil but if you want the state to kill terrorists on your behalf you ought to know that it's impossible for the state to do that without doing evil.

Of course it

Of course it does...confiscating funds by force is necesarily unjust.

And yet there is absolutely

And yet there is absolutely nothing the state can accomplish without doing injustice.

Right. Which has nothing to do with Barnett's point.

I'm afraid I don't see quite

I'm afraid I don't see quite what the point of Barnett's observation is supposed to be to a libertarian anarchist who has never disputed it.

He appears to be making a categorical claim amout libertarian anarchists, and if so in that he is mistaken. But yes, it does not follow form the fact that the state is in principle unjust that everything it does is unjust in and of itself. I guess this means Barnett has seen some libertarian arguments argue badly. Now what?

That last bit should read:

It's a mistake to assume

It's a mistake to assume everything the government does is bad. For example, it usually goes to sleep overnight. It is not a mistake to assume that everything a government does by initiating force is bad.
