Not offending the offenders

Despite knowing that a heinous, dangerous act physically carried out usually gets one thrown into a maximum-security prison in the first place...

Corrections Canada won't let guards at maximum-security prisons wear stab-proof vests because it sends a confrontational "signal" to prisoners, says a department spokesman. "If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause.

I find it hard to have any

I find it hard to have any sympathy at all for someone who takes a government paycheck in exchange for keeping people in cages.

Similarly, I find it

Similarly, I find it difficult to sympathise with anyone who uses extreme force (murder, rape, etc.) onto others to achieve their own goals, and consequently finds himself inside one of those cages.

We may agree on the extent to which the government should have control over punishment and correctional facilities (if at all), but I'm not losing any sleep over the idea that the D.C. sniper is now spending his days in a cell with nothing but four walls, a toilet, and a bar of soap to gaze at.

Now, as far as the prison guards... regardless of whatever problems we have with the source of funding for prisons, the idea that wearing a safety vest will "offend" these murderers and rapists, thus shouldn't be worn at all, is amusing and certainly falls in the ever growing P.C.-run-amok category.

Sure. But that isn't the whole of the prison population, and I'd be unsurprised if it wasn't even a *majority*. Yes, even in CanSoc's maximum security lockups.

Very true, John. There are

Very true, John. There are too many reasons to list why throwing drug users, prostitute "madames", and the like, into jail cells is a crime within itself.
