<del>Socratic</del> Derbyshiric Ignorance

The shorter John Derbyshire:

  1. I do not understand economics.
  2. Economists (notably, socialists) have been wrong in the past.
  3. David Ricardo's theory of comparative advantage and his advocacy of free trade has not been very popular.
  4. Therefore, "Most likely it is all a crock."

Of course, his admitted lack understanding doesn't stop him from advocating protectionism.

As someone much wiser than myself once said,

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a "dismal science." But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.

It's a very dangerous vice though.
